In 2019, Narendra Modi successfully managed to retain the BJP in power. It was the third instance in the political history of Bharat that a leader could manage to win elections, with the majority, twice. Moved by the Modi's nationalist policy, charismatic leadership, and a weak opposition, BJP successfully managed to get 300+ seats alone.
The victory is a symbol of the great trust that Bhartians have on Modi. But with this victory comes a huge responsibility and expectations that Modi has to perform on the various fronts. Riding on the wave of trust and confidence, in this first year, Bharat has witnessed some historic judgments and a slumping economy.
The Article focuses on the Modi 2.0 government reforms, judgments, and mistakes.
Among the 59 Bills introduced by Modi 2.0, a total of 45 bills passed becoming a law in the year 2019. But few got a lot of nation's attention, which I will discuss.
Triple Talaq -
Modi government successfully criminalized the triple talaq system. The bill was planned to make instant triple talaq in any form — spoken, in writing, or by electronic means such as email, SMS, and WhatsApp illegal and void, with up to three years in jail for the husband. Muslim women were entitled to demand the maintenance of her and her children, which was subjected to certain restrictions. The bill also provided the scope for reconciliation without undergoing the process of nikah halala if the two sides agree to stop legal proceedings and settle the dispute.
Although Bill faced the heat of opposition from the various opposition parties, BJP could successfully pass the bill through both the Parliament houses. This move will give BJP an upper hand in maintaining her public position.
Grade: 10/10
Reason: This law will help our Muslim mothers and sisters from long-lasting biased practices.
The UAPA Bill-
The Unlawful Activities and Prevention Amendment Bill was brought by Home Minister Amit Shah to curb the terrorist and Anti-Bhart activities, in July 2019. The main objective of the bill is to conduct strict actions against those who work against the Integrity and sovereignty of Bharat. It empowers our forces to deal with such activities.
Despite the various attempts by the opposition, the government managed to implement the bill and turned it into law. Recently, the word "UAPA" is making into headlines related to the Anti-CAA protest rioters.
(I would urge readers to read more about UAPA, and the freehand that it provides to our dealing forces.)
I feel this Bill will help Bharat in dealing with many anti-national activities if used in total consciousness.
Grade-8/10
Reason: The law provides special powers to our agencies and forces; if not used with the correct intent this may create tensions in the society. To date, no such example is found.
Abrogation Of Article 370-
On August 5, 2019, the Modi government made a historic decision of abrogation of article 370. Special status to the state of Jammu and Kashmir is no more. The decision came on the ground when the state did not have a local ruling government. Although, the government faced a lot of heat from the opposition, the idea of integration justified the Bhartvasis and few opposition parties.
The decision did not come into implementation as easy as it seems. There was a massive cut for the state with the outer world. The top leaders, activists, separatists were house arrested. Curfew situations halted the life of the citizens there for a while which tells the importance of this decision.
The Government disintegrated the state into 2 Union territories- 'Jammu & Kashmir' & 'Ladakh'. The decision sends a message on the international front about the idea of integration from Bharat.
The situations in the newly formed UTs are close to normal today, it still deprives of 4g network. Leaders remain in their house arrest to date. But as a result of this decision, Bharat has been able to carry out massive infrastructure developments in the state. The incidents of opposition from the separatist forces are reduced to a great extent. The process of domicile distribution to our Kashmir pandits has been started. And finally, various age-old problems seem to cease slowly.
The government continues to mention further, that they will integrate the disputed and conquered Chinese and Pakistan occupied regions to Bharat, soon.
Grade - 9/10
Reason- The abrogation of the article was a very bold and much-required step. The article deprived the state of various development projects. Also, the act curbed Anti-Bharat activities to a great extent.
Ram Mandir Judgement-
A five-Judge Supreme Court bench read out a unanimous judgment and ruled in favor of the Ram Janmabhoomi. Although it was a mere dispute, it will have a far-reaching impact on BJP. The issue always stayed at BJP's core. And when finally, judgment is on the BJP's side, Modi's popularity among the Hindus will surely soar.
The justice was successfully delivered by the Supreme Court of India by preserving our secular fabric. Entire Bharat rejoiced and people across the country, belonging to different castes, religions, accepted the decision.
Rate-10/10
Reason- The government was successful in maintaining a law & order situation throughout the nation during this historical Judgement. And finally, the intent of the government helped the Hindus to get the birthplace of Lord Ram.
Citizenship-Amendment Bill-
In December 2019, the Modi government as a citizenship bill. Every person even apolitical would know this bill as it had led to severe protests throughout the nation. Bill promises citizenship to people on a religious basis who belong to the minority in Islamic countries like Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan, who faced persecutions.
As it did not mention Muslim citizens under the law, created massive protests in the country.(Although it does not restrict Muslim immigrants to apply for citizenship through normal procedures) I will not go deep in defining the entire bill but, yes, the problems regarding illegal immigrants are being discussed in the country for a long time.
After CAB, the government hinted at another bill named NRC. Those who will fail to qualify the criteria will be turned illegal and loses the citizenship of the country. So this CAA+NRC formula left our Muslim population in fear. Although, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah made this clear that one living in Bharat already, need not fear. As the bill will not affect the citizens of Bharat in any ways.
The unclear guidelines about the bill, poor communication from the government of Bharat with her citizens, and fake news circulations led to a few massive destructive protests in the country. In a few places, the protests turned into communal riots which led to the lives of many Bharatvasis. To-date government and our intelligence agencies are arresting the inciters, while few have been booked under UAPA.
Observing the massive protests and opposition, the center says that it has stopped the discussions on NRC. I hope the government resolves the problems and come in front with clear solutions and proper guidelines and active communication.
Grade-7/10
Reason- The intent of the government is correct. But the government failed in persuading its citizens as the Bhartvasis who were protesting on the grounds were concerned with their citizenship. Despite the fact, this bill has nothing to do with Bharatvasis. I hope the government comes with a better communication channel while bringing NRC.
Corona-Crisis Management-
Started from the Wuhan, China, Coronavirus has led to massive destruction on many scales world-wide. Bharat saw her first positive case in December 2019. After observing the world-wide situation, India finally started to act pro-actively in March 2020. The total number of cases in Bharat was not high then. To restrict the virus at a very early stage, PM Modi called for Janta Curfew and then the first 21-days nation-wide lockdown.
The move was appreciated at large by the Bharatvasis until different problems began to come ahead. Due to a lack of resources and instant announcements our laborers started to walk by road to their native villages. The scenes give a chill to our bones. Their problem became the biggest problem for the government. As the number began to rise at a rapid rate and norms of social distancing in practice, the Central Government with the help of the State government requested people to stay there, wherever they are. But this did not help to solve the crisis as the movement of laborers continued. They were determined to map the entire frontier.
In two months, the Center and State have successfully managed to solve this problem to an extent. The solution did result in a few miseries and life losses for which the government must be accountable. But at the same time when they have conducted operations on such a large scale, only unfortunate incidents must not be considered for the validation.
Today, in the wake of declining economy Modi government lifted the lockdown and started an Unlock process. But are we done with the virus? The intensity has risen. Every day, Bharat is observing a rise of 9500+ positive cases. Though the recovery rate of Bharat is outstanding compared to other nations, the actual positive case rise is alarming. We are advancing in the ranks of the total number of positive cases. At the same time, we must focus on our metropolitan cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, Chennai which contributes to 50 percent of the total cases.
The crisis did make our governments realize the loopholes in our medical sector. I hope the situation in the country does not get worse anymore as Bharat lies far behind in the medical facility services. The lives and health of citizens can not be a good trad-off against the dangling economy.
Grade-7/10
Reason- Although the decision of a complete lockdown was the important and necessary one. The first implementation without proper notice period made the life miserable who were away from their families. Both central and states are equally responsible for the mess which resulted, as the state could not manage the people within its boundaries. Also, the lockdown is lifted at the times when we are getting a high number of cases, this hints mismanagement of our authorities of state and center, collectively.
Economy-
The growth rate of the quarter Q4, January to March, has come out. Bharat grew by 3.1%. It is the lowest among the 4 quarters of FY 2019-20. Though we have beaten street estimates, the figure is a big concern. The growth rates are assumed to fall in the Q1 of FY2020-21 since the lockdown impositions.
Recently, the government announced an economic stimulus worth Rs 20 Lakh Crore. RBI has also come forward with decreased interest rates for the banks. Government and RBI are trying their best to revive the business sector which has got a hit in the pandemic. The government has increased the borrowing capacities, and also changed the definitions of MSMEs to compensate for the benefits for MSMEs. But this solves only one part of the system as the consumers have no such direct benefits, who drive these segments. The government must come forward to inject more liquidity in the consumer segment as the common man has nothing to get in this entire package, other than reduced TDS rates.
The Agriculture Sector is a great contributor to our GDP. The approach for the farming sector has been similar. Instead of extensions in loan repayment and convenient loan schemes, the government should have worked on direct fund transfer schemes. The government claims of transferring the money to their bank accounts which is a commendable step, but cash in the hand is the need of an hour.
Exports are touching lows and unemployment figures to new highs. With this situation, Modi's ambition of making Bharat a 5 Trillion economy looks far away, after observing the future predictions.
It will be interesting to see how Modi tackles the problem and revive our economy.
Grade-6/10
Reason-The government has to scrutinize its policies and strategies. The "Atma-Nirbhar Bharat" mission will require a lot of boost from the government to its citizens. Unemployment remains a consistent problem. The labor problem will appear again but in a different dimension. Few positives that we may look up to are our FDIs, corporate tax rates deductions, our local supply chain, a behavioral shift toward the digital economy, etc.
Overall, the first year of Modi will be remembered for a few very bold decisions he took. Corona crisis did decrease the government's momentum. Being an engineer, I feel that we can very well validate the government's performance in SGPA terms. By averaging the grades, the Modi government's aggregate score turns out to be 8.14. To any engineer out there can relate this as a decent SGPA.
Bharat will expect a lot from Mr. Modi with the amount of mandate he has received. Unfortunately, I could not mention many other important issues of the formation of Combined Defence Staff to regulate and operate our forces, strengthening the international relations, Space missions, merging of public sector banks, etc. Moreover, media surveys lead to the conclusion that citizens are overall satisfied with his work, determination, and goal. It will be interesting to see the government's performance in this 5-year term and see how well it can maintain and grab high SGs.
Jai Hind!!!
That's it from my side! Stay Safe!!
I would urge the readers to actively participate in the "Vocal for Local" campaign. Believe me the campaign will yield overwhelming reasons and solve our local issues to a great extent.
