The Aryan Invasion Theory: Does India comprise of Invaders?

Writer's picture: The Old MonkThe Old Monk

'Invasion': the word which is now lost and restricted to the books finds the place in a theory which claims that India has become the land of the Invaders-The Aryan Invasion Theory.

Indian school textbooks still provide the space to such speculations which tell that we are the products of the people who came from Central Asia and parts of Europe.

The Theory states-the Aryans as supposed superior race invaded the land and drove down the natives to further south in late 1500 B.C. They claim the credit of the origination of ancient language Sanskrit and our Vedas.

The theory is ridiculed by the major, in India, which denies any such invasion resulting in our existence. The West strongly supports the theory and believes a group of Aryans with horses and Chariots gave an entirely new dimension to the existing structure.

Theory-

In the 19th century, the British studied Indian languages and found similarities with the West. Then a German Philosopher Max Muller formulates a possible case and coins this invasion theory. He hints the possible invasion of people from central Asia and Europe in the Indian Subcontinent around 1500 B.C. The Vedas and our language Sanskrit is the contribution of these same invaders-theory says.

The Theory got a big jolt when in 1920s British Government found the remains of our ancient Indus Valley Civilization. The remains beneath the soil hinted the existence way before this supposed invasion. Although, the theory stands on the genetic basis as various institutions found some part of the DNA of European origin, in Indians.

But this should not be held as a basis for an invasion because DNA mixing may also occur due to interactions. The people living in Central Asia and Europe also have Indian flavor in their DNA and Language.

So did Indians invade these areas?

The Indian POV-

The fact that Aryans came to India and drove native Dravidians to the South is majorly discarded in India. The theory is discarded and disproved in India on a scientific basis, not because of the sense of inferiority.

Why does not India accept the theory?

  • Firstly, our Vedas extensively gave importance to the Saraswati River. But the river dried years before 1500 B.C, which is when this supposed entry of Invaders happened. So the creators of Vedas praising the river which they did not even see disproves the fact that they wrote them.

  • The submerged city of Dwarka which is renowned for Lord Krishna hints the existence of civilization and iron age a long time before the supposed Aryan invasion and throws this fact, of the introduction of chariots to natives, out of the window.

  • Our civilizations were found very advanced in various archeological reports and carried trading. Trade practices involved the migration of the people which may be one of the possible reasons for our interactions with them. And so we found their traces in our DNA.

  • The historians and archeologists did not find any single source of violent interactions during the same period in India, which hints the systematic inclusion of these people by the living civilization.

  • The word Aryan is not even mentioned in our language. We call the noble person in the society Arya.

  • The fact that the native Indians, so-called Dravidians, were fought and pushed down to the southern part was falsified by the similar genetic observations of all the people across the country.

  • The argument that Aryans were fairer, and so are the most North-Indians is a baseless fact and ridiculed by scientists. They say, our skin color is subjective to the exposure to the sun, and as we move down the equator, we are more exposed to the sunrays.

The recent excavation in Rakhigari made a ground-breaking revelation. The scientists did not find the R1-a1 component in their DNA which concludes the absence of these European forces.

Why this theory got coverage in the first place?

According to my observation, this is a theory proposed by Britishers and western powers to prove to us that they are superior and we inherit our culture from them. As this would gain respect for them from our people. The further theorization of the southward Dravidian push was a successful attempt to divide our people, similar to India-Pakistan divide on religion.

Yes, history is written by those who are the winners and they will glorify themselves. The theory is an example of the same saying.

The theory still reverberates in Indian Politics actively. The word Dravidian has got some special affection in South-India politics. Majority parties in Tamil Nadu have word Dravidian in their name. While the Right and majority left has dumped the theory.

At this point, not a very significant proof or justification is found which either completely justifies the invasion theory or completely disproves it. The majority of the ancient civilization part lies near the India-Pakistan Border, which is why it is difficult to carry an intensive research. Although, the timeline observation disproves the theory to a far extent.
